VIEWPOINT Relativity Gets Thorough
نویسنده
چکیده
O n September 14, 2015, the LIGO interferometers made the first direct measurement of gravitational waves [1]. The historic discovery came nearly 100 years after Einstein showed that his general relativity theory predicts the existence of gravitational waves and over 50 years since the first quest to observe the Universe in gravitational waves [2]. The observed event, labeled GW150914, was the collision of two black holes, one weighing 29 solar masses, the other 36 solar masses. This binary coalesced into a remnant black hole weighing 62 solar masses and rotating at 67% the maximum rate allowed for a black hole. The most statistically significant portion of the signal came from the last several gravitational-wave cycles of the collision, where the most nonlinear, strong-field dynamics of the theory manifest. One couldn’t have asked for a better first event to learn about this regime of general relativity.

General covariance and the foundations of general relativity: eight decades of dispute
Einstein offered the principle of general covariance as the fundamental physical principle of his general theory of relativity and as responsible for extending the principle of relativity to accelerated motion. This view was disputed almost immediately with the counter-claim that the principle was no relativity principle and was physically vacuous. The disagreement persists today. This article ...

Tomislav Ivezić Ruder Bošković Institute, P.O.B. 180, 10002 Zagreb, Croatia [email protected] Some of the well-known experiments: the ”muon” experiment, the Michelson-Morley type experiments, the Kennedy-Thorndike type experiments and the Ives-Stilwell type experiments are analyzed using the nonrelativistic theory, the ”apparent transformations (AT) relativity” and the ”true transformations ...
متن کاملLess Mundane Explanation of Pioneer Anomaly from Q-Relativity
There have been various explanations of Pioneer blueshift anomaly in the past few years; nonetheless no explanation has been offered from the viewpoint of Q-relativity physics. In the present paper it is argued that Pioneer anomalous blueshift may be caused by Pioneer spacecraft experiencing angular shift induced by similar Qrelativity effect which may also affect Jupiter satellites. By taking ...
متن کاملMarcottage: A Navigational Approach to Object Networks
In many situations involving highly connected networks of objects, such as semantic networks in AI, hypermedia networks, or scene representations in computer graphics, the notion of "current viewpoint" or "current focus of attention" is important. In traditional systems, the network structures are considered relatively fixed, while the user's viewpoint is considered to move through the structur...
متن کاملIntroduction to Tensor Calculus for General Relativity
There are three essential ideas underlying general relativity (GR). The first is that spacetime may be described as a curved, four-dimensional mathematical structure called a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. In brief, time and space together comprise a curved fourdimensional non-Euclidean geometry. Consequently, the practitioner of GR must be familiar with the fundamental geometrical properties of c...
